Canadian Championships Report

The Senior National Championships were held this past weekend in Moncton, NB.  The weather was fantastic! Perfect for the power and speed events, minus the wind, but perhaps a little too hot for the endurance athletes. The Thunderbirds had a few athletes representing the club, Rachel Cliff in the 5000m and Ness Murby in F11 Shot Put, Javelin and Discus.

Ness competed on Friday evening, in downtown Moncton, in an event dubbed 'Shot in the Dark'.  Live music, a beer gardens and a few hundred fans welcomed both men and women shot putters.  Ness was the only blind shot putter competing, and threw a respectable 8.64m.  In the Javelin, she threw a new Canadian Record of 20.19m, although that won't be ratified, as she's still waiting for her Canadian citizenship.  In another new event for her, Discus, she threw 21.59m.

Rachel contested the 5000m on Saturday evening. Due to the heat, she hung back early on, but fought hard in the latter stages of the race to hold finish second and garner her first National Championships medal on the track.

Congrats to both athletes for their great performances in Moncton!
