A small but hardy contingent of Thunderbirds headed out to Mundy Park for the annual starting event of the cross-country season: The Pinetree Classic hosted by Coquitlam Cheetahs.
The fledgling Thunderbirds were successful in the races in which they competed: Kate Logan taking 2nd in the 12 year old girls race, with Ruby Forsyth close behind in 7th.
The 11 year olds ex excelled with Harris Boomer and Elijah Clarke battling out to the end, Harris getting the nod by just 3 seconds. Benjamin Smith ran gamely for 10th. In the girls event Taylor DeWitt fought hard to take second, not far back from the winner.
The 10 year olds boys dominated their race; Francesco Hawkey, Christopher Guite, and Gianluca Hawkey finishing 2nd, 3rd, and 4th respectively, while Laerke Peterson, Alice Barton, and Sara Lehman took 4th, 5th and 10th respectively in the girls’ race.
The youngest Thunderbirds: Madeleine Belsch and Kaiya Bradley took 1st and 5th in the 9 year old race.
Some older Thunderbirds also flew along the course: Brayden Horlock taking 6th in the Under 16 race and Alexandra Campbell and Nanette Novak-Klotz taking 4th and 7th.
Finally, Stephen Symon, running unattached, showed that he is still as good as some spring chickens, by running the 5.8km course in 23:03 5.
Next up are the South Fraser and Spirit Run at Jericho Beach this coming Saturday and Sunday, respectfully.
