Thunderbirds Claim Overall Team Title at Jerome Indoor

The Vancouver Thunderbirds dominated the Richmond Oval yesterday, at the 2018 Jerome Indoor earning the Eaton Cup, for the top overall club team, while UBC Varsity took top University team honours. 

Among many strong performances, and multiple personal bests, highlight performances included: Ryan Cheng, setting a new meet record in the 60-metre hurdles of 8.23 seconds and Maya Baechler setting a new record in the 600m for 13 y/o’s in 1.44.48 and being named top JD performer.

In the sprints Thunderbirds claimed six of eight places in the 300m Open, with Paul Fisher earning a win followed closely by teammate, Egidio Cantarella.

Logan Fung picked up second place in both the youth 60m and 300m, a feat equalled by Lola Ross-McLennan in the midget category, Terence Cheung almost duplicating in the midget’s 60m hurdles (2nd) and 300m (3rd). Terence’s brother, Clarence, matched his older brother with 3rd in the 60m and 2nd in 600m (13 y/o JD).

Loren Eisses and Jordyn Reed went 1-2 in the JD 13 y/o 60m, Miller Dabbs and Chloe Symon ran to second place, Boomer Harris picked up bronze and Sancho McCann won the open 60m.  

In the distance events, Paul Fisher and Sam Prevost went 1-2, Ben Ross won the 1000m, Emily MacGowan ran to a silver medal in the 1500m youth race. Thunderbirds Edward Marsh, Cameron Healey, Kieran Healey and Renaldo Miya took 2nd through 5th in the midget 1200m; Ella Symon and Makenna Baechler went 1,3 in the midget 600m; Brayden Horlock and Lauren Soobrian took 3rd places in the 13 y/o JD 600s, and Kai Martland, Miller Dabbs, Harris Boomer, and Gabbi Barton, and sister Alice Barton all won their 600s, for their respective age categories. Griffen Cole, Cameron Phipps finished second in the 600m, and Libby Dabbs was third.  

Luka Poljak and Colleen Ogilvie both took the open high jump titles, Sarah Cathcart taking 3rd and also placing 3rd in shot, and Matthew Uliana took 2nd in shot.

In the final event of the day, the 4X200m relays, the Thunderbird Youth, Midget and JD 13, JD 12, and JD 11 teams all took home top honours; the midget women taking 1st through 3rd place in their race.
