Weekend Round-Up 7/14

This weekend we had a number of Thunderbirds competing and many PBs!

At BC Provincials in Nanaimo there was a great deal of success for Thunderbird athletes. Gold medals were obtained for Quinn  Litherland in the 400m (50.13), Paul Fisher with a PB in the 800m (2:05.33), Jackson Cheung in the 110mH (14.44), Michelle Yee in the triple jump (10.22m), Michael Pryzstupa with a PB in the Decathlon,  and our men’s 4x100 teams both in the open and midget sections. Silver medals went to Paul Fisher with three PBs in the 200m (23.84), 300m (37.28) and the long jump (5.84m), and Ethan Strome in the 400mH (59.13). Bronze medals were awarded to Stephen ABosi with a PB in the 100m (10.73 Q, 10.75), Hayley Madden in the 400m (59.32), Rui Ando in the 400m (51.32), Kenneth Ng in the long jump (6.19m), Yuri Suzuki in the long jump (6.27m), and Candice Yee in the 200m (28.93). PBs were also obtained by Andrea Hui in the high jump (1.50m), Tennille Robertson in the 1500m (5:08.31), Manon Plouvier in the 2000m (7:12.73), Bridgett Baziw in the 2000m (7:17.58), Sebastian Mattman in the 400m (57.48), Jonah Glover-Cook in the 1200m (3:45.83), and Calum Mackenzie in the 2000m (6:36.43).

In the BC JD Pentathlon in Chilliwack this weekend eight Thunderbird athletes competed. It was a fun day with lots of PBs achieved. Cole Gladders, Suzanna Mattman, Phillipe Brunet achieved PB’s in every event and every athlete achieved at least one PB during the day: Ella Symon achieving a 2 sec PB in the 80mH, and a PB in High Jump (1.21m) and shot; Finley Butler a PB in Long Jump; Claire Stewart a PB in shot; Francis Sadleir in 60m Hurdles and High Jump; and Spencer Terry achieved a 1 second PB in hurdles, and PBs in Long Jump and shot. Top finisher of the day was Suzanna in 2nd place in the girl’s 9 year old division followed by Phillipe in 6th in the boys division, Finley and Cole in 7thin the 11 and 13 year old age groups respectively, followed by Claire in 8th in the 12th year old age group and Ella 10th (Girls 12 yo) and Francis in 12th (11 yo). Spencer had a good day but had to withdraw just prior to the 800m, but will be back to contest the BC Championships next weekend.

In the FISU Games in Gwangjo Rachel Cliff reached the 5000m final where she came 6th with 16:13.08.

In other news, Jackson Cheung was named to Team Canada for the Panamerican Junior Championships in Edmonton. This adds to Cheung’s place on Team BC for the Western Canada Games, alongside teammates Stephanie Cho, Quinn Litherland, and Hayley Madden.
