Derrick Johnston appointed as Head Coach (Power/Speed)

The Vancouver Thunderbirds are pleased to announce the appointment of Derrick Johnston as the Head Coach Power/Speed effective immediately.

He will be replacing James Buhlman who has been with the club for the past two years and now will be pursuing other goals.

Derrick has been coaching track and field since 2000, starting out at the high school level in London, ON.  After moving to Calgary in 2006, he became the head power and speed coach with CALTAF.  Under his guidance, 2 athletes represented Canada at international competitions, one winning a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games.  A brief move back to London in 2011 found him coaching at Western University, where he helped them win their first Men’s CIS Championship in school history. For the past season he was the head sprints coach at UBC, and had great success with a young team.  His most recent accomplishment is being a member of the coaching staff for Team Canada at the 2013 Pan Am Jr Championships, where Canada won a record-breaking 19 medals.

James will be working with Derrick to facilitate an orderly transition of his affairs, and in this connection there will be a short information meeting to be held at St George's Junior School gymnasium on Tuesday September 10th at 7.00 for all power/speed athletes and any interested parents.
