This weekend there were a number of competitions which Thunderbird athletes aimed to excel in. To begin with, the Canadian National Championships took place in Edmonton from July 2nd to 5th. Highlights from Nationals included Rohan Stewart progressing through the rounds of the 100m and 200m, alongside teammate Amonn Nelson who made the final of the 400m with a 54.11 in qualifying. Stewart was also a member of the gold medal winning 4x100m team. Michael Aono qualified for the 400m Junior final in 49.30, and Akeem Haynes qualified for the 100m final with a run of 10.15 and he placed 5th in the final race with 10.20. Akeem’s 10.15 in the heats was a lifetime best and a club record! He will learn shortly if he will be selected for the Canadian 4 x 100 team to compete at the World Champs in Beijing . Medals came in gold form from Christabel Nettey in the long jump (6.76m), who only took two jumps as she is saving herself for PanAms and World Championships, Dustin Walsh got gold in both the T-11 400m and 200m, and silver for Jackson Cheung in the Junior 110m hurdles (14.12). Other performances included Erica Digby in the 1500m final (4:30.89 in qualifying), Kyle Nielsen in the Javelin (62.63), Katherine Tourigney in the senior 400m hurdles (1:02.00), Sarah Korpach in the junior 400m hurdles (1:04.44) and Devin Rajala in the 800m (1:58.50).
