The UBC Cross Country and Track and Field Team Head Coach Laurier Primeau announced today that club coach Chris Johnson is confirmed as the Lead Endurance Coach for the varsity team. CJ is an alumnus of the team and he has been coaching with this Club for the past seven years.
Primeau said, ‘bringing Chris on board given his work with Rachel Cliff (15:33 in the 5000 and multiple time National Team member) and Erica Digby (Canadian Team to the Francophone Games 2013) among many other members of the Vancouver Thunderbirds, would be a great kick-start to the 2015-16 version of the varsity coaching contingent.'
Chris Johnson added, ‘UBC has been an important part of my life since my days as a student-athlete. I ran on the UBC cross country and track and field teams from 1994-1999 and have served as an assistant coach since 2008. My coaching experience with St. George's School and Vancouver Thunderbirds Track and Field Club as well as my work with provincial and national team athletes has put me in good stead to work with collegiate athletes. To be given the opportunity to lead the middle and long distance runners at UBC is truly an honor for me and I am excited to get started’.
Chris will remain as the Head Endurance Coach of the Vancouver Thunderbirds, and sees this new challenge in his coaching career as a huge benefit to club athletes wishing to transition to UBC for both athletics and their college education. The Club is now able to offer seamless coaching from the JD level through to post collegiate level with this latest appointment.
