Thunderbirds Shine at BC Athletics Championships

Several Thunderbird athletes were in action last weekend at the BC Athletics Championships in Kamloops. 

The Thunderbird middle distance group represented the club very well, bringing home 11 medals.

In the midget category, Roberto Pelayo Mazzone captured gold in the 1200m and bronze in the 800m and Calli Charlton earned bronze in the 1200m and 2000m. Brodie Marshall placed 4th in the 2000m a day after contesting a triathlon in Kelowna. In the youth category, Sophie Dodd had an impressive kick to bring home the gold in the 800m. Other youths in action were Max Trummer (5th in the 800m) and Matthew Taylor (13th in the 1500m).

Christian Gravel won the junior 1500m and dug deep to capture silver in the 800m. Kansas Mackenzie competed well and picked up a silver medal in the junior 800m and a bronze in the 1500m. Katrina Allison was 5th in the junior 1500m and captured gold in the 3000m. Other juniors in action were Braeden Charlton (9th in the 1500m and 10th in the 800m) and Christian Favreau (13th in the 800m). In the senior category, Rachel Cliff won gold in the 5000m and Alex Kilpatrick was 5th in the 800m. Coaches Chris Johnson, Sean Dawson and James Buhlman are very proud of all of the athletes that competed in Kamloops and congratulate them for representing the club in such a positive way!

The Thunderbird power and speed group also had a successful outing.  In the Midget Boys Long and Triple Jump, Richard Wang had two personal best performances.  In Youth action, Ahmad Nizamani won Gold in the Long Jump (6.50m) and Gold in the 4 x 100m relay.  Ethan Strome won Silver in the 300mH with a massive PB of 38.70, qualifying him for the BC Legion Team. Strome also picked up gold in the 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m.   Matthew Chan had breakthrough performances in the 100m heats (11.24) and final (11.11).  His time in the final was slightly over the legal allowable limit. Matthew also won gold on both relays.  Sophie Pauls picked up Silver in the HJ (1.60m) on count back. She also picked up Silver in the Youth Girls 4 x 100m relay.  Joyce Lin won bronze in the Triple Jump with a PB of 10.73m, she also finished 5thin the Long Jump and ran to Silver on the 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relays.  Cherry Lam won Bronze in the Pole Vault with a jump of 2.20m and also picked up 2 silvers in the relays.  Also competing as Youths were Jacob Cutts (4th in Javelin 44.49PB), Michelle Yee (6th in the 200m), Lauren Fraser (17th in the 200m).  In Junior Men’s action Sean Szeremeta was 6th in the 400m (51.92) and a PB of 23.29 in the 200m.  In Junior Women’s action, Natalie Cryderman captured Bronze in the 400m closely followed by Candice Yee in 4th.  Sajeda Win (5th in the 100m, 6th in the 200m) and Emily Russell (8th in the 100m & 200m) put two T-Bird women in the final of both short sprints. Emily Huser Jumped her way to two Bronze medals in Triple Jump and High Jump respectively.  The Youth Girls captured Silver medals in both the 4 x100m and 4 x 400m relays.  The Junior women won Silver in the 4 x 400m relay with a spirited anchor by Sophie Dodd.
